While drinking enough water in the day seems like a very basic part of life, it is easy to fail at it when life gets busy. This is even truer for elderly individuals as they often forget things and they have more trouble reading their bodies than other people. Dehydration can strike an elderly individual with little or no warning and can be extremely dangerous. Making sure that your loved one is drinking enough water is essential to their wellbeing. There are several things that can be done to ensure that you or your loved one is getting enough water in your day to day routine.


The first thing to consider is what your daily routine looks like. For most elderly individuals there is a good part of routine involved in their life. They have a schedule of getting up at a certain time every day and following a set routine that likely includes some type of medication. Taking medication is an excellent opportunity for an elderly individual to get some of the necessary water they need for their body. Drinking a good glass or two of water is a good start for the day.

Replace What You Lose

Remember that when you are outside walking, exercising or doing yard work, there is a good chance you are losing a good portion of the water in your body through sweating. Take a water bottle with you everywhere that you go. This will ensure that it is within arm's reach when you need to take a sip. Always make sure water is on hand in case you or your loved one starts to feel confused, weak or dry. These are all signs that there has been too little water put into the body for the day.

Set Up Daily

Another good way to make sure to get enough water in the day is to set up a system where you or your loved one drinks a specified amount of water each day. This can be very easily accomplished by setting up several water bottles in a refrigerator or cool location that need to be used before the end of the day. This will make it easy to remember to get water in and eliminates the need of keeping track of what you have had to drink throughout the day.

Other Resources

There are several other ways besides drinking water to get enough liquid in your body. Keep fruit on hand so that you are able to take advantage of the water from the fruit as well. Vegetables also provide a good source of water in your body and can be a good snack for everyone to take part in. Making sure that the other foods you take in provide some form of water can be extremely helpful in avoiding dehydration.

Dehydration can lead to other problems such as pneumonia, bedsores, urinary tract infection, kidney function problems and even death. Make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep you and your loved one hydrated all year long.
